Starfish on a beach

Changing Lives – It’s Why I Love My Job

Starfish on the beachI wanted to share a story that has taken on special meaning to me, maybe it’s one you already know:

A young boy walked along a beach filled with starfish that washed up during a storm the night before. Instead of adding to his seashell collection, he picked them up and threw them back into the ocean, as far as he could. A couple of older kids tossing a Frisbee noticed him as he approached. When he got closer, they asked what he was doing.

“I’m helping the starfish,” he explains.

One of them laughed. “Look how many there are. You can’t possibly try to save them all.”

The boy picked up another starfish and threw it. “I helped that one, didn’t I?” he asked. “I made a difference to that one!” And he repeated this each time he picked up another starfish.

I really love this story because it shows that no matter how small or insignificant our efforts may seem, everyone can make a difference. For me, helping people achieve their goals and find more enjoyment in their lives is my way of making a difference. What’s even better is when I can help someone accomplish their goals and they end up helping others too! One more pair of hands helping the starfish on the beach.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I don’t necessarily enjoy exercise and continuously work to improve what I eat. Fortunately, Beachbody gives me the right tools and support to keep me motivated. In turn, I can share those tools and extend support to others. (coaching is free, and I enjoy being able to help people: hmmm… maybe I’m a hopeless people-pleaser).

If you are a starfish looking for a way back to the water, or if you want to join in helping starfish find their way off the beach, just drop me a line.

Do you have a story that is meaningful to you? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
