Making time for Me

Who Has Time For That? (Not This Mom)

Making time for MeIsn’t it crazy how it felt like there was so much time when we were kids? All kinds of activities, visiting with friends, trying new things, never feeling rushed. Now, I don’t even keep a written calendar because the act of actually writing down all the things that have to happen gives me anxiety. Seriously, it is just too much to look at, I’d rather keep it all in my head (which often has its drawbacks…).

This month, time is very much on my mind. There never seems to be enough of it and each moment of the day, week, month seems to get filled. I find that I’m disappointed that I’m not making time to play tennis or ride my bike, things I really enjoy. But they just don’t seem to currently fit. Honestly, hardly anything “personal” seems to fit, the last time I got a haircut was almost a year ago. (yikes!) I have managed to make my workouts a priority though, but that didn’t happen by accident.

I workout either right after I get out of bed, or my “back up” workout time slot is after I drop off my youngest at pre-school. If it doesn’t happen then, I have another “back up” time slot right before I go to pick the kids up. Some days, life just happens, so the “fail safe” time slot is 7 or 7:30pm, before dinner. If I’m working out then, my husband joins me. The fail safe time slot works because he holds me accountable get the workout completed. He knows that this is important to me, so it is nice to have that support on the days when I need it.

Personal time

How I get in my “personal time” with my husband.

Besides the last-chance workout, it is a priority for my husband & I to make time at least once a week to be together, even if it is the trip to Costco on Sunday nights. Which it has been for the last couple weeks. When the mania is a little calmer, we try to go out to dinner once a week and we really enjoy going to the movies. But that hasn’t happened for quite awhile. Right now, the day gets gobbled up by time with the kids, kids activities or working on my business. No place for hobbies currently, but with the kids all being in school come fall, that might change.

Recently my husband bought a “hobby” car. A 1987 BMW convertible. He is currently learning about it, reading books and manuals, so that he can fix it up. I love that he’s pursuing something that he’s passionate about. It does make me wish for a bit more “me” time in my schedule. As I learned with my workouts and time with my husband, these things don’t happen unless I decide they are a priority and plan for them to happen. (kinda like meal planning I guess…)

I’d love to hear about your schedule and how (or if) you are making “you” time. Let me know what time is like in your life in the comments.
