What it Means to be a Fit Mom

featured_body imageBeing a fit mom is important to me—obviously, since I’m a Beachbody coach. During my journey, it’s been easy to compare myself to supermodels and those on the fitness videos I workout to everyday. But being fit is about SO much more than just the way you look. It’s about how you feel, And how your increasing self-confidence effects you in your day-to-day life.

Raise the Bar

I am all about raising the bar for myself. A few years ago, I put in the extra training and was dedicated to eating a very strict diet. I wanted to see how far I could go towards looking like I was really “in shape.” In the end, I weighed about 30 pounds less than I do now.

This is what you see in athletes, supermodels and those on your favorite videos. They eat for fuel, not for fun (which I didn’t find enjoyable at all). They don’t reward themselves with food like most of us do. They maintain strict workout and diet plans, with incredible FOCUS to reach their goals – rarely splurging on things many of us could not imagine living without.

I realized quickly that that wasn’t going to work for me because maintaining that lifestyle was unrealistic in my life. Heck, if you want to be an athlete, be an athlete. The end result is that you will look like one if you train and eat like one. I know the type of dedication and focus it takes and that and it’s not somewhere I’m choosing to be right now..

Stay Healthy, but Enjoy Life

To me, being a fit mom is about being healthy and enjoying your life, making reasonable choices about food and exercise. You don’t have to be perfect (I’m certainly not).

It’s just about getting better every day.

It’s about eating the right things and moving, exercising.

It’s about feeling good in your skin.

It’s not about the number on the scale.

As we get older, muscle mass helps to prevent injuries and yoga keeps us flexible and youthful. That’s what I’ve learned from the trainers I follow. Tony Horton is a HUGE advocate of yoga as the fountain of youth, and I’ve found that to be true. We need that movement and flexibility if we’re going to live a long and healthy life.

Get Healthy + Have More Energy

Being fit is about much more than the way you look. Think about the energy you have. Exercise makes for more confident, happier people. When you’re fit, not only are you feeling good, you’re setting a good example for your kids to keep moving—and you can keep up with them too!

I started on my journey to become a fit mom because I was frustrated with where I was. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror or in photos. My desire to change was greater than the pain of the work I knew I needed to put in to achieve my goals. You have to want it badly enough.

That roll on your belly didn’t show up overnight, so you can’t expect it to go away overnight. Be healthy and enjoy your life. Don’t compare yourself to others who have been living this lifestyle for a long time, or who get paid to look a certain way.

Realize and celebrate your progress along the way. (This is IMPORTANT and something I’m still working on.)

How Sweet it is

In the end, nothing is going to feel as good as reaching your goal. When you get to your goal, you’ll forget the sacrifices you’ve made—what you’ve given up in the short term to reach your long-term goal. Nothing will feel as good.

I’m here if you need me. I can’t make you want it, but I am here to help you figure out how to get it.
