Anniversary Adventures in the Big Apple

Our anniversary was a few weeks ago, but our celebration was a trip together (just the two of us) to New York City while my parents stayed with the kids.  Three lovely days to reconnect and make memories together.

We got off to a great start, due in part to still being on “west coast time”. We checked into the hotel and went to dinner then went to the Empire State Building where we spent about an hour looking at all of the lights and all of the different views. We then  went on the Staten Island Ferry and enjoyed the view of the Statue of Liberty.

We had tickets to ‘Hamilton’ which was beyond incredible. If you get a chance to see it, I highly recommend it. The story was captivating and we’d gotten the soundtrack before we went to see the play so we were familiar with the music. The kids have listened to the soundtrack, as well, so we are enjoying it even beyond the Broadway experience.

And then… we ate our way through Manhattan!  We wandered the neighborhood to find local places and stumbled upon Chelsea’s bagels, which were fabulous.  Then we had some Baked by Melissa cupcake bites, which we enjoyed even if we were mostly paying for the packaging. It was all an adventure and it was fun! And, of course, we did some typical ‘tourist’ things, like souvenir shopping at 11:45 p.m. (that’s typical, right?)

The first day we were there, we must have walked past a dozen pizza places, but when we finally decided to sample New York Pizza, we had to walk for 20 minutes to find a pizza place.

We enjoyed walking different parts of the city, Wall Street, Millennium Tower, 911 Memorial, Trinity Church where Alexander Hamilton is buried. We also walked across the Brooklyn Bridge which was definitely an experience.

We had been a bit worried about the weather as it was supposed to be cold, but it was 79 degrees while we were there.  My only real fail was my choice of shoes.  I brought short, waterproof boots and tall, warm boots. Logging 25,000 steps the first day, what I really needed was tennis shoes and I got the blisters to prove it! (Ouch!)

What a fantastically fun way to celebrate our anniversary and spend some time together. I’m so very thankful that we had the opportunity.
