Making Your Own Workout Accountability

Years ago, before we moved to our current home, a few of my neighbors and I got together to workout. Sometimes we met at one another’s houses and other times we used space at schools, community centers, libraries, karate studios—basically anywhere there was free space. We even met in empty storefronts and parks to workout. We liked to think of ourselves as a little fit club.

This piece of accountability might have been the only reason some of us worked out that day. It kept us all on track and helped to build a real community within our community.

Even if you don’t have close-knit neighbors like I did, you can still create your own accountability for your workouts. Here’s how!

Schedule a Time and Place

Book your workout accountability times in advance, so you’re sure to get it done. Maybe you’re checking in virtually because you’re too far away from your workout buddies to get together. Tell your accountability partners what time you’re working out and what you’re doing and have them do the same. Then check in just before that time, and again after the workout.

Come to a Consensus

If you’re working out in-person with accountability partners, you need to come to a consensus about what workouts you’re doing. You have a lot of choices with Beachbody, especially if you take advantage of the All Access Pass. But each program has a different focus and style. Decide if you’re looking for a weight program or more cardio focus; if you need a quick workout or can choose a program with longer sessions.

When you have different workout goals, agreeing on a program might be a challenge. So keep reading! You don’t have to be doing the exact same workout to be accountability partners.

Gather With Friends

If your closest friends don’t live in your neighborhood, schedule a weekend hiking date instead of happy hour. You can have the same great conversations while working off calories (instead of packing them on with cocktails). Or set a goal to train for a race and meet at a destination a few months down the road to run it together. Whatever the event is, doing it with friends will keep you on target.

Connect Online

True accountability comes in numbers. When you commit to doing something and you tell people about it, you’re more likely to follow through. My Facebook groups are where I get my accountability these days. I commit to a program, tell fellow coaches and customers in my groups and then I get it done. They’re counting on me to check in daily to let them know I got my workout in and my nutrition is till on-point. And then they do the same.

I recently took a spontaneous trip to visit my former neighbor who now lives in San Diego. She continues this tradition with her group every morning and it was so nice to participate each morning while I was there. True support makes all the difference when you’re trying to make a positive change in your life. If you need some support and accountability, let me know. I’ll be there for you!
