The Family That Works Out Together…

family working out togetherMy family is definitely an active one. With my workouts, which various family members will join me for from time to time, and my kids’ sports, we are often found doing something active.

Back in February, I posted on Facebook about starting tennis lessons. I had realized that so many of my “hobbies” were related to my children’s sports and I wanted to do something for myself. I took lessons years ago, but I never took the time to actually play and get on the court with other people. And until you play a real game, you’re not going to put your lessons and skills to work.

With an active family, I’m not the only one who plays. As of just recently, all six of us are now tennis players—at all different ability levels.

A few weeks ago, Molly started taking lessons, at her request. One day, she and Lucy walked into their lessons together, hand in hand, and my heart just melted with pride and love. Even though they’re 3.5 years apart in age, it feels good to know that they can be friends and that they have something they can do together.

Six years ago, we were on a very limited activity budget. Each child could only choose one thing to be involved in, and Molly was too young to really do anything. Plus, just making sure everyone got to where they needed to be was a challenge.

Now we have much more freedom to allow the kids to choose activities they love. I’ve been able to grow a business that allows a lot more wiggle room in our budget. I feel blessed and grateful that everyone is able to try out and experiment with different activities, and to continue doing those that they love.

Interestingly, they all started with soccer. Lucy has recently discovered a love for volleyball and is enjoying tennis. Charlie is part of the U.S. Tennis Association now, and of course Jack is playing club soccer.

With everyone active, we can play together. Jack and Jeff are a good match for one another, Charlie can play up with the big boys or take it easy on me and Lucy and every loves to play with Molly.

I love that my kids enjoy being active and healthy and am grateful for the ability to give them that gift.

What are ways your family stays active together? What are some sports you play together?
