What Would You Do With 4 Days Alone?

Between soccer tournaments and sleep-away camp, the kids were really busy this summer. And when Jeff left for a four-day work trip, I found myself at home—alone—for four full days. No kids. No husband. And no plans.

I honestly don’t remember the last time I’d had time alone at home like that. Before Jack was born, maybe?

Jack was finishing up his time playing soccer in Israel, Charlie and Lucy were away in Wisconsin at camp for the summer and Molly was at sleepaway camp for the first time. Everyone was gone.

I love my busy, active life. But there’s something to be said for quiet space when you can do whatever you want—whenever you want.

I could have gone with Jeff to Vegas, but living so close to the city of lights, I’ve been there enough that I don’t need to go there again. Especially not for four days.

So I opted to stay home and entertain myself for a few days. And it was pure bliss!

What would you do with four days all to yourself? Here’s how I spent my time:

  • Caught up on some doctor’s appointments that I had been putting off—bone density test, mammogram and AAA screening. (Okay, so these weren’t bliss, but they were needed!)
  • Spent time reading on my couch. In quiet.
  • Pampered myself with a massage.
  • Hung out with some friends.
  • Enjoyed the quiet.
  • Caught up on some work.
  • Did I mention the quiet?

Spending time alone is such an important part of self-care. Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to mean a sweaty workout or expensive beauty regimens. It can mean just uninterrupted silence in your own home for as little as 10 minutes when you really need it.

Of course I get time alone, away from the family, when I take trips for work. But that is typically a really busy time, where I’m with my team and attending educational workshops. There’s a thousand other things on the agenda and there’s rarely time for quiet.

I encourage you to look at your calendar and find time each day, week and month to spend some time working on you, for you. Can you do it?
